Xsquared Architects is thrilled that Thyne House has been recognised with a High Commendation in the New Entrant category of the 2023 Think Brick Awards. Director Peter Scott attended the awards ceremony in Sydney on Friday 15 September 2023 and was presented with the award.
Established in 2005, the Think Brick Awards are national awards that encourage architects and designers to push boundaries and reimagine the application of brick, block, pavers and roof tiles in contemporary design. The awards attracted 140 entrants this year. Of those, 40 were shortlisted, and there was one winner and four commendations in each of the six categories.
Congratulations to all who helped to make this project happen and especially our client, Communities Tasmania (now Homes Tasmania) and the builder, Vos Construction and Joinery.
Thyne House is a supported youth accommodation facility in Launceston located within a sprawling heritage-listed complex of former industrial buildings. It was important for this prominent, contemporary building to reference Launceston’s long history of clay brick construction. To this end Xsquared Architects worked closely with Brickworks to develop a unique brick, characterised by its rich brown colour and significant surface flaring – a contemporary take on the traditional Launceston brick.
