The Prisons Infrastructure Redevelopment Program D1 project involved $21m of alterations and new building works within the maximum security areas of Risdon Prison.
Working in conjunction with correctional architects Guymer Bailey, and spanning a number of years, Xsquared Architects were directly appointed by the Department of Justice then subsequently novated to the builder under a Managing Contractor model. The centrepiece to the project was an education and sports hall building that provides a new focus for inmate activity and learning. Careful thought was given to the use of a restrained palette of materials and colours, including in the Art for Public Buildings incorporated in the work, whilst ensuring a high level of robust detailing.
