Tasmanian Ambulance Service

11-6 TAS HQ

The Ambulance Tasmania State Operations Centre houses a diverse range of key community facilities that range from the patient transport communications centre to ambulance wash down stations.  What may be surprising is that these functions are accommodated within an existing open-air parking structure that has been used as a skeleton around which the new facility is constructed.  Different internal functions are rendered visible through the use of three discrete facades facing Brisbane Street, one representing each internal function, and each of these facades is, in turn, designed with the adjacent heritage listed Penitentiary Chapel in mind: the articulation of the slatted screen references the geometry of its Georgian windows and the enfolding steel art wall helps the two buildings to read as part of one urban composition to imbue the project with the urban relationships, sustainable features and dignity appropriate to the importance of the functions it houses.
